One of the many disruptions aggregated by the Covid-19 pandemic is the rapid and massive digitalisation of the education system. With the inception and impact of technology in education, we are witnessing a wide range of innovative changes in the teaching methodologies these days. These new-age teaching methods are not only innovative and have been making education more interactive and engaging, resulting in enhanced academic rigour. A wide range of multimedia applications is fuelling this fast-evolving process. Teachers adopting innovative teaching Gone are the days when classrooms used to depend only on physical face-to-face verbal interaction methods between the teachers and students. Also, gone are the days when teaching methods used to rely only on the instruments like blackboards, hand-drawn diagrams, charts etc. In the new age classrooms, teachers have been adopting innovative ways to make learning more interactive, engaging and intuitive for the students. Several apps, 3D modules, audio and video reels are used alongside the conventional instruments to teach the students. For example, to teach soil erosion in Geography class, or a chemical reaction in a Chemistry class - a teacher can use multimedia-enabled teaching solutions, which not only make the process easier but also garners more attention from the students. The subjects that require a practical approach are often aided by multimedia-enhanced teaching solutions, which help both the teachers and students. Research published in the International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR), states that multimedia applications re-engage and accelerate the education process in a significantly improved manner than the conventional teaching systems. Students prefer tech-enabled learning Not only the institutions, students too are showing keen interest in technology-enabled teaching. As the pandemic has increased the focus on distance learning, a hybrid education system with phygital (physical and digital) approach, and the technology-aided learning method is finding a stronger footprint. A study conducted by The WorldGrad claims that around 72% of Indian students who want to study abroad are willing to choose hybrid programmes, which require direct penetration of multimedia applications. This percentage came as a significant surge from 55% even a few months ago. These hybrid programmes combine both online and offline teaching methods. It not only makes the education system interactive and engaging but lowers the cost of education for the students without compromising the quality of the learning. Also, it helps them to avoid health-related risks evolved due to the pandemic. In an increasingly digitally connected world, the students’ psych is very different. They think and act differently than before. New-age students are more interactive, interconnected and well-informed thanks to the wider availability and their exposure to the internet and other open-source learning methods. To cater for their demands of learning, these new-age technology-infused multimedia-guided teaching solutions are proving to be reality helpful. There are different opinions about the increasing technology penetration in the education sector. While many believe it is fuelling more growth in the segment, many others believe the technology dependency is actually affecting the conventional relationship between teachers and students. Technology implementation in the education sector and new-age classrooms are simply inevitable. Growing multimedia applications in the classrooms are just one aspect of it. Technology can become the ‘wings’ that will allow the educational world to fly higher and faster than ever before; if we will allow it. (The author is CEO, Navneet TopTech)
