I like Apple tv UI, so smooth and responsive. Thats it. I hate that there is no kodi from app store, and the apps from android tv are not always in apple tv. Android used to lag in apps availability in comparison to apple, but now its the other way around. I have netflix, but still not good enough the fact that kodi and iptv player app that i like (hello tivimate) are not available in apple store. I have nvidia shield, 2017 and 2019, snappy but i still prefer the smoothness of apple tv. But what can u do with smooth apple tv when u r limited in terms of app? So nvidia shield its is. Shield is snappy in general, but apple tv is consistently smooth. I hope my opinion didnt trigger any fanbois here.

Software pre-installed in flagship TVs are already good enough. Apple workouts being a possible good use for this aside, why would anyone buy this? Got an Apple TV, used it for years, and noticed how much the preinstalled Android software streamed videos at much higher quality. Imagine my disappointment when I always thought the Apple TV was still the only way to go for TV streaming.

Anonymous, 19 Oct 2022 This seems so good that i hope Nvidia will launch updated Shield tv soon. Lol seriously? the Apple TV is one of the worst things you can have, It is so limited in features in any way and any basic and cheaper ATV box can get you much more. Nvidia Shield even the 2017 is still receiving updates and have a very powerful chip inside that it doesn't need any update on the hardware side.

Using a box such as Apple TV, will improve... more For supporting Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, you need a display capable of such standards, since these are tied with bit depth (number of colors display supports), and brightness. Buying a box won't make your display capable of these standards since. If you specify which TV you have might be able to help better.

Conderio, 19 Oct 2022I think you are mixing up Android tv and smart tv which makes your whole argument irrelevant. ... more Samsung doesn't sell a TV box though, and someone who has not bought a Samsung TV is either stuck with Android or something worse. And Samsung will also skip certain standards, like Dolby Vision, AV1, in favour of HDR10+ and upcoming VVC. Not to mention you miss on the huge library of Android apps. Does Tizen have third party Media Player like VLC? I remember Bada OS, Tizen OS for mobile, Tizen OS for smartwatches. It's not long before Samsung abandons Tizen OS altogether, though they have started licensing Tizen OS to other TV manufacturers, we'll see how well it's adopted. And again, instead of buying a Samsung TV, I'd buy a cheaper TV and plug in an Apple TV box and still have some money left. It's not bad at all for a TV OS, but my X brand TV cannot run Tizen OS, and it's cheaper to buy a TV box instead of replacing you existing TV. In some cases it applies to buying a new TV too.

Anon95, 19 Oct 2022 I have my doubts that Nvidia will release a new Shield since the last one was released 5 years ago. Most recent Nvidia Shield tv is from 2019.

A Linux Box is a bit more capable than a Windows10 Mini PC. While both are much more capable than Android OS Box. Which is a bit more capable than the proprietary AndroidTV certified Box. Also that's a bit more capable than the Apple TV box. And moving another step down to the popular Amazon Fire Stick, or lastly a Google Chromecast. But running parallel to this, oppositely, the User Experience gets very easy and simple at one end (Chromecast/Apple TV), and it becomes clunky and difficult at the other end (AndroidOS/Linux). So it really depends on the user. I like the power, so I would personally go with a Windows10 PC, most likely a refurbished Laptop for good value. It would suck, and eat up a whole weekend but eventually I would have it set up properly as a powerful HTPC hub.

This seems so good that i hope Nvidia will launch updated Shield tv soon.

yalim, 19 Oct 2022 smart TVs don't need this.traditional TVs don't support 4K.what's this for? Much faster and stable than rubbish smart tv implementation. Also gaming and partt of the Apple ecosystem.

salarx, 19 Oct 20221. Android Smart TVs suck, because they use a crippled SOC which lags when navigating through ... more I think you are mixing up Android tv and smart tv which makes your whole argument irrelevant. Smart TV's like Tizen on Samsung's and WebOs on LG TV's are propertiery which doesn't require maintenance for users like on Android or apple tv where user have to keep updating software and becomes sluggish after year or two. Apps like Netflix ,prime and others are licensee per model and will work as specified and advertised as long as services are still running unlike Android where updates slows down UI.

Stupid question. Got a 4 year old samsung smart TV. Using a box such as Apple TV, will improve the quality of apps such as Netflix etc, or will remain the same?

yalim, 19 Oct 2022 smart TVs don't need this.traditional TVs don't support 4K.what's this for? 1. Android Smart TVs suck, because they use a crippled SOC which lags when navigating through UI. 2. They max out at 16 GB, out of which 8-9 GB is taken by system and pre-installed apps. Install a few more apps and your storage is done. 3. There's no standardisation where OSD controls need to placed. 4. Every app has its own version of insesrch app, and they equally suck. 5. These android TVs will stay at the same Android version they are launched with, and they usually launch with 2 generation old Android TV (you'll see TVs launching with Android TV 11 when Android TV 13 is a thing). The situation is same as stock CPU coolers that you get free with your desktop processors. It's there, will work great for some but if you want decent experience, you'd buy some custom solution. Personally I'd prefer a dumb 4k TV. It'll probably be cheaper by $100 without the smart SOC. For $130, I'd get an Apple TV so $30 extra not a bad investment.
